Retail, Logistics & Shopping Centres

The retail sector is arguably, the most advanced in the use of intelligence to influence security decisions. By introducing leading technology, such as Mitie’s business intelligence software, retailers have been able to gather granular level data on incidents, enabling more in-depth analysis of risks to understand when and where resources are best utilised. This data capture in turn then feeds the intelligence function for each retailer, with the demand for dedicated Security Operations Centres (SOCs) on the rise. These SOCs are a crucial part of intelligence services for retailers, capturing and analysing data and supporting customers with security decisions. SOCs also are the vital link between retailers and the Police, providing the bridge between the public and private sectors to conduct joint operations targeting prolific offenders or organised crime groups with great success.

Through Mitie, leading retailers including Sainsbury’s, M&S and Co-op have invested in dedicated SOCs and following their success have subsequently introduced a pioneering data-sharing agreement (DSA), the likes of which has never been seen in the security industry before. Under the DSA, the retailers share offender data, enabling a much broader picture of prolific offenders and organised crime groups, which can then be provided to police to take action. Having this data available has resulted in quick, practical improvements, enabling them to take a more agile approach and adjust their security resource in real-time based on the intelligence at their fingertips.

Critical Security Environments

Through industry-leading business intelligence software, organisations in this sector can ensure they are aware of emerging threats and can implement plans to mitigate them effectively. Furthermore, introducing a full suite of intelligence services, including being part of a wider intelligence network such as Mitie’s, and introducing counter-espionage services such as TSCM, organisations can be assured they have taken all necessary precautions to effectively manage and mitigate risks.

Critical Security Environments will soon be impacted with the upcoming Protect Duty legislation, where publicly accessible locations are required to implement measures to keep the general public safe. Set to be introduced in 2023, it is essential that organisations act fast to ensure compliance when the legislation begins. A key component of this will be conducting risk reviews of sites, to identify areas that need to be improved to meet regulations. Through Esoteric, Mitie provide thorough site risk assessments to help customers improve their solution and become compliant. In addition, Esoteric also conduct scenario testing and live exercising, including penetration tests. These solutions ensure that sites remain compliant over time, all colleagues understand their roles and responsibilities, and teams are prepared should they ever face a real incident.

We are proud to support key Critical National Infrastructure sites such as Sellafield, and Central and local Government.

Corporate & Iconic Buildings

Any organisation is at risk from the espionage threat, whether the threat actor is foreign state, competitor, insider or criminal, should they have sensitive information and assets which the threat actor is prepared to go lengths to obtain. However, dependent on the nature of the asset and the risk appetite of an organisation, many consider themselves as facing a higher degree of espionage threat and need to take action to mitigate. Examples may include those within sensitive industries such as Legal and Media, or highly competitive sectors such as FMCG. Many such organisations also occupy iconic buildings in built-up locations, facing the unique threat of urban explorers, protests and specific risks due to signal egress.

Using intelligence, technology and specialist people expertise, Mitie helps customers to mitigate the threat of espionage and location-specific risks. Real-time intelligence prevents incidents of urban explorers trying to scale a building, by helping security teams to identify potential urban explorers, as well as implement mitigation measures to prevent them gaining the required access. Counter-espionage consultancy results in effective protocols and a range of countermeasures being implemented to mitigate the espionage threat, including TSCM, physical pen testing, TSCM training and egress reviews to detect signal leakage and interception risks.

Working with organisations such as Lloyds of London, BBC, and The Shard, Mitie have the experience and expertise to help companies protect their people, assets, and environment.
